Coal miners became further protected against black lung disease Nov. 23 after a final rule took effect that establishes spirometry facility testing for coal miners’ health exams. The rule updates medical surveillance standards established in 1969.

A record-low 24 deaths led the 2016 fiscal year to be the “safest year in mining history” says data published by MSHA. Mining deaths decreased by nearly 37% from 38 fatalities recorded in FY2015, MSHA says.
